2015 TigsTown Awards: DSL/VSL Tigers

Among the rookie league teams playing in Venezuela and the Dominican, who stepped up to earn player and pitcher of the year honors?

DSL/VSL Tigers Player of the Year: 3B Randel Alcantara

2015 Stats - Hitting
TEAM AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG
DSL Tigers 213 37 65 21 6 2 36 26 42 7 4 .305 .415 .488

Signed during the 2013 international signing period, Alcantara showed flashes of his potential during his debut season as a 17-year old in 2014, before exploding with a strong season in the DSL in 2015. In 60 games, 56 of which came at the hot corner, Alcantara posted a .903 OPS that included 21 doubles, six triples, and two home runs to help support a .305/.415/.488 line. Similar to his first season in the professional ranks, Alcantara posted a solid walk rate, earning 26 free passes in 256 plate appearances, while only striking out on 42 occasions. The biggest challenge for Alcantara represents the development of his glove as he made 25 errors in 56 games, down from 30 errors in 48 games in 2014. All told, Alcantara’s prospect stock will rise and fall with his bat, and his bat performed quite nicely in 2015.

DSL/VSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year: LHP Felix Viloria

2015 Stats - Pitching
TEAM G GS SV IP H HR R ER BB SO HBP ERA WHIP W/L
DSL Tigers 14 10 1 62.0 50 1 23 17 13 67 6 2.47 1.02 2-3

Another 2013 international signing, Viloria excelled during his debut season in 2014, posting a 2.28 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 47-1/3 innings split between the starting rotation and bullpen. Working more consistently as a starting pitcher in the Tigers tandem system in the VSL in 2015, Viloria again turned in an impressive performance. Across 62 innings of work and 14 games total, Viloria posted a strong 2.47 ERA with only 50 hits allowed and 13 walks issued. All that, combined with an impressive 67 strikeouts led to just a 2-3 win-loss record, but certainly put the young left-hander on the map for a potential trip to the United States next spring.
