Detroit Tigers Fall & Winter Ball: Scottsdale Wins AFL Title

The Major League Baseball season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Arizona Fall League - The Arizona Fall League ended last week, with the brief season culminating in a championship game between the Surprise Saguaros and the Scottsdale Scorpions on Saturday afternoon. Three Tigers prospects saw game action for the victorious Scorpions, with outfielder Mike Gerber making a fine sliding catch in right field and going 1-for-5 at the plate, third baseman Dominic Ficociello going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, and reliever Montreal Robertson giving up one unearned run in a single inning of work. For Gerber and pitcher Adam Ravenelle, the AFL championship is their second title of the year, as both were on the West Michigan Whitecaps, who took home the Midwest League Championship back in September.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - Four of the Tigers prospects on LIDOM rosters saw game action last week, including Confesor Lara, who threw three scoreless innings on Monday in his first appearance since October 27th. Lefty Jairo Labourt threw one inning, giving up two hits and an earned run, and his teammate Jose Valdez also got into one game, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 2.57. Outfielder Steven Moya had one of his better weeks of the fall, going 5-for-14 with a double, a home run, and three walks.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The rosters in Venezuela continue to be loaded with Tigers players, but once again few saw game action. Several players appear to be done for the year, and the Francisco Rodriguez trade means Leones de Caracas infielder Javier Betancourt is no longer a member of the organization. On the other hand, infielder Jose Zambrano and catcher Franklin Navarro saw their first action of the VPBL season, with Zambrano going hitless in three at bats over four games, and Navarro doubling in his lone plate appearance. The only other hitter to see time was catcher Miguel Gonzalez, who went 0-for-5 with a run scored in two games. Pitcher Alfred Gutierrez appeared in two games, recording just a single out in both outings, but picking up a save on Wednesday.

Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente - It appears outfielder Ismael Salgado isn’t going to see any more action in the Clemente League, but reliever Joe Jimenez continues to serve as the closer for the Gigantes de Carolina, though he had an up-and-down week. He picked up a save on Friday by striking out two over a perfect inning, but two days later he was saddled with the loss after giving up three hits and two runs in one inning.

Mexican Pacific League - Down in Mexico Julio Felix surrendered his first runs in more than three weeks, raising his ERA from 0.69 to 1.80. He tossed 1 1/3 innings over three appearances, giving up four hits, a walk, and two earned runs, while striking out two.

Australian Baseball League - Aaron Sayers is having a strong fall campaign in Australia, but the native Aussie didn’t play at all last week due to a hand injury, which he suffered after getting stepped on the week before. Pitcher Calvin Drummond did see action, however, getting into two games, tossing two innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out two, and picking up saves in each contest

Liga Paralela - The Liga Paralela Tigers went 2-2 last week, bringing their record to 9-23 on the season. The offense continues to struggle, but the team did get a few strong pitching performances, notably from Daniel Gonzalez (5IP, 3H, ER, 5K) and Javier Villaroel (4 2/3, 5H, 0R, 2BB, 2K) .
