Detroit Tigers Fall & Winter Ball: Angel Nesbitt Debuts

The Major League Baseball season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - At the conclusion of the Winter Meetings the Tigers announced a number of new minor-league free agent signings, including several players who have seen action in various Fall/Winter leagues this year. Anthony Fernandez, Santiago Garrido, and Lendy Castillo have played in the LIDOM this year, but none participated last week, while Rafael Dolis re-upped with the Tigers, so we can begin looking at his very strong stats, which included a single scoreless inning last week. Confesor Lara and Jose Valdez both got into two games last week, with Valdez taking a loss after giving up three earned runs in one inning, while Lara picked up a win after giving up one run in 2 2/3 IP. On offense, Jefry Marte saw his first LIDOM action since October 10th, going 1-for-6 with a double in three games, while Steven Moya had a very strong week, going 7-for-18 with a double and five RBIs.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - There was plenty action in Venezuela last week, too, including a few new faces joining the organization, the return of a promising reliever, and a bench-clearing brawl. Veteran hurlers Corey Riordan and Ruben Alaniz both saw action last week, with Alaniz getting into four games and tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Another newcomer, catcher Albert Cordero, went 2-for-5 with a walk during the week, while fellow backstop Miguel Gonzalez went 3-for-9 with three runs scored. Pitcher Alfred Gutierrez tossed one scoreless frame and infielder Harold Castro went 2-for-5 with a stolen base over three games, but the biggest news of the week came from two hefty relievers. Angel Nesbitt made his 2015 VPBL debut, throwing 1 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings over two outings while walking 2 and striking out three. Bruce Rondon’s week was slightly more eventful, as he gave up a run on two hits and two walks in one outing, and then in the next game he was ejected for his part in a bench-clearing fracas.
