Detroit Tigers Fall & Winter Ball: Dolis Keeps Dealing

The Major League Baseball season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - The LIDOM regular season officially comes to an end on Monday the 21st, with the playoffs beginning on Sunday the 27th. The Tigers had five prospects participate in game action last week, but only four of them will continue in the playoffs. Jose Valdez is the one player left out, and he had a bit of a shaky final week, getting into three games but walking four and striking out two in one inning pitched. Confesor Lara and Rafael Dolis also saw action last week, with Lara pitching an inning-and-a-third of clean baseball, and Dolis giving up one hit and striking out three over 2 scoreless innings. He finished the regular season with 17 strikeouts, four walks, and a miniscule 0.53 ERA in 17 innings, the second lowest of any LIDOM pitcher with at least 15 appearances. The Toros del Este claimed the 4th seed in the playoffs, and last week they got help from both Jefry Marte and Steven Moya. Marte went 3-for-11 with a double and two RBIs in four games, while Moya went 5-for-19, but saved his best for last, going 3-for-3 with a HR and six RBIs on Sunday.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The Venezuelan season is also winding down, though they have one full week of action left. Tigers prospects didn’t do much last week, aside from infielder Jose Zambrano, who played in six games and went 4-for-17 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Harold Castro went 2-for-6 over three games, while catcher Miguel Gonzalez went 0-for-2 with an RBI in the only game he entered. On the mound Alfred Gutierrez, Angel Nesbitt, and Ruben Alaniz combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings over four appearances, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out two. Perhaps the most noteworthy VPBL news last week was the absence of Bruce Rondon, who was involved in a bench-clearing brawl the previous week.

Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente - Closer Joe Jimenez has been the lone Tigers representative in the Clemente league for most of the offseason, but last Friday outfielder Ismael Salgado doubled in just his second at-bat of the season, and his first appearance since November 6th. It was his only plate appearance of the game, and he hasn’t seen game action since. Jimenez did get into one game, striking out one in a scoreless frame to record his fifth save of the season.

In all he threw three innings in three games, recorded two saves, gave up two hits, and struck out two.
