TigsTown Detroit Tigers Minor League Players of the Month: June 2016

It was a month of resurgence down on the farm, as a number of prospects that started the season off slow had monster months in June to lay claim to player of the month honors.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – C John Hicks

70 AB | .329 AVG | .382 OBP | .643 SLG | 21 RBI

Hicks was a force for the Mud Hens in the month of June, putting up an OPS over 1.000 and driving in 21 runs for the Hens. While the club has had its ups and downs this season, and a revolving door of certain players making consistency tough to come by, Hicks, who was acquired in April off waivers, has been a steadying force in the lineup and behind the plate. Machado, who had a terrible spring, warmed up in the month of June with a .794 OPS.

Runner-up: SS Dixon Machado

AA Erie SeaWolves – IF Dominic Ficociello

87 AB | .287 AVG | .380 OBP | .437 SLG | 12 RBI

After getting a chance to swing the bat in spring training with the big league club as a non-roster invitee, spring was very slow for Ficociello. The thaw came in June, as Ficociello picked up his average, while continuing to post a very good walk rate (12 walks to 18 strikeouts), and ripped nine extra base hits, including a pair of home runs. He just edged out Krizan, who ripped 7 extra-base hits and walked an impressive 18 times.

Runner-up: OF Jason Krizan

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – OF Mike Gerber

95 AB | .316 AVG | .377 OBP | .537 SLG | 15 RBI

Continuing with the theme of players that got off to a slow start, Gerber started hammering the ball in the month of June. He hit over .300 for the month after hitting in the .220-.230 range for the first two months, and while his strikeouts remained high (32 K’s in 95 AB’s), he started driving the ball with a dozen extra base hits.

Runner-up: IF Joey Pankake

A West Michigan Whitecaps – OF Derek Hill

104 AB | .327 AVG | .372 OBP | .452 SLG | 7 SB

Derek Hill has already been making highlight reel catches that have garnered plenty of attention, and in June his bat was worthy of attention as well. Hill saw his average pop up to .327, a welcome sight after hitting at the Mendoza Line in May, but also saw the gap power come around too, with six doubles and two triples for the month. Add that to his seven walks and seven stolen bases and you had plenty of Hill rounding the bags last month.

Runner-up: OF Jose Azocar

R DSL Tigers – OF Juan Ramirez

85 AB | .341 AVG | .467 OBP | .482 SLG | 3 SB

In the first full month of the DSL season, Ramirez stole the show for the Tigers with an OPS well over .900. Showing a good eye and good contact skills, Ramirez posted 19 walks compared to just 12 strikeouts, impressive even in a league known for wildness on the mound and free swinging at the plate. Couple that with nine extra-base hits and Ramirez did plenty to earn the award, as he currently leads the Dominican Summer League with a .377 average.

Runner-up: SS Jorge Ynirio
