Detroit Tigers Fall & Winter Ball: JaCoby Jones Keeping Up

The minor league season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues, including JaCoby Jones, who is working to position himself as a front-runner for the Tigers vacant center fielder spot.

Arizona Fall League - The Salt River Rafters head into the final week of AFL action with a slim one-game lead in the standings after a 3-3 week that saw key contributions from Tigers prospects. Outfielders JaCoby Jones (8-for-17, 2 2B, 3RBI) and Christin Stewart (5-for-12, 3 2B, 3RBI) led the way for the offense, while Spencer Turnbull (4IP, 3H, 5K) had his best start of the fall, and Artie Lewicki pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. On the downside, catcher Greyson Greiner went just 1-for-8 with four strikeouts, Jeff Thompson could record only one out before giving up four earned runs, and the previously untouchable Adam Ravenelle (one hit in his first seven innings) gave up six hits and four runs in two innings. Meanwhile, Victor Alcantara’s Scottsdale Scorpions also went 3-3, but are in last place and will be eliminated shortly.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - There’s not a whole lot to report from week four of the LIDOM, because with three players we’ve been tracking (Jordany Valdespin, Tommy Shirley, and Preston Guilmet) officially free agents, only four Tigers minor leaguers saw game action. Santiago Garrido and Jairo Labourt both made an appearance, but neither recorded a single out, and Labourt was saddled with his first loss after giving up a run on a hit and two walks. Gustavo Nunez had a solid week at the plate, going 6-for-16 with three walks and three runs scored, while Jason Krizan went 4-for-17 with four walks.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The action was similarly sparse down in Venezuela, with Tommy Collier heading home for the rest of the year, and only four other players seeing game action. Infielder Harold Castro (4-for-20) cooled off from his torrid pace, but he did manage to score three times and knock in three runs in five games, while Arcenio Leon (2IP, 2ER) picked up his 11th save of the season, and Ruben Alaniz pitched a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 1.88. The biggest news coming out of Venezuela was the fall debut of reliever Paul Voelker, who gave up two earned runs over 2 2/3 innings last week.

Roberto Clemente League - Fall ball has begun down in Puerto Rico, with five teams battling it out for the next six weeks. So far outfielder Ismael Salgado is the only Tigers minor leaguer to see any game action, with his Cangrejeros de Santurce sitting in first place with an 8-3 record.

Baseball Parallel League (Liga Paralela) - Times are still hard for the Detroit Liga Paralela team after a 1-4 week dropped them to 4-14-2 on the season, though they still remain in 10th place out of 11 teams. The week actually got off to a good start with a 12-1 win over Aragua on Monday, in which starter Kilbert Santana (4IP, 3K) pitched well, and Santiago Vital, Moises Bello, Keider Aristigueta, and Pedro Hurtado all knocked in two runs. Everything went downhill from there though, with a 12-1 shellacking on Tuesday, a tough 2-1 loss on Wednesday, and a 4-1 loss and a 1-0 shutout loss on Thursday.
