Detroit Tigers Fall & Winter Ball: Large Ulrich Bojarski

The minor league season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - It was a rainy week in the Dominican, with five games postponed due to rain or wet grounds, and as a result the few Tigers minor leaguers in the LIDOM saw even less game action than usual. Veteran infielder Gustavo Nunez got into four games, but went just 1-for-12, while Jason Krizan played in three games and went 1-for-4 with four walks. Recently re-signed right-hander Cory Riordan was the lone pitcher to see action last week, and he only worked a single inning, giving up one hit but no damage.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - Rain didn’t affect Venezuela as much as the Dominican Republic last week, and a few new names saw action during the week. Harold Castro saw minimal reps, going 0-for-5 to extend his run of misfortune at the plate, while David Gonzalez made his fall ball debut with a solid week, going 4-for-15 with three extra base hits. Relievers Arcenio Leon and Ruben Alaniz both got into two games, and both picked up a save, though Alaniz threw two scoreless frames while Leon gave up four runs in a rough outing. Two new starters saw time last week, with Endrys Briceno giving up seven hits and two earned runs over three innings, while the newly signed William Cuevas, a long-time Red Sox farmhand, had a very strong outing, giving up just one run and striking out nine over 5 1/3 innings. Cuevas now leads the league in wins, starts, strikeouts, and WHIP, and he ranks second in ERA.

Roberto Clemente League - There’s not a whole lot to report from Puerto Rico. Outfielder Ismael Salgado got into three games, but he only saw one at bat, and he didn’t record a hit.

Australian Baseball League - The second week of the ABL once again saw three legitimate prospects get into game action, with one posting a solid performance, one impersonating a windmill, and one announcing his presence with authority. Young left-hander Jack O’Laughlin made his second career start, giving up two runs on four hits over four innings, to bring his ERA to 3.52. Third baseman Zac Shepherd appears to be dealing with some serious rust at the plate, as he went just 2-for-15 with ten strikeouts, though he also managed to walk four times. But on the other end of the spectrum is outfielder Ulrich Bojarski, who had a monster week. He only went 4-for-14, but those hits included a bases-clearing triple and his first career home run. He scored three times, knocked in eight runs, recorded his first walk, and even picked up a stolen base. The 18-year-old international signee is off to an auspicious start to his pro career.

Baseball Parallel League (Liga Paralela) - The Detroit Liga Paralela squad appeared to be building off their previous week’s success when they began last week with a doubleheader sweep over Caimanes, but then they dropped their next four contests to fall back into the rut they’ve been in for most of the season. They now own a 9-20-2 record, and they sit 12 games out of first place with two weeks of games left.
