Detroit Tigers Winter Ball: William Cuevas Shines

The minor league season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - The rainy season continued down in the Dominican last week, though most of the Tigers minor leaguers were able to get on the field and make up some of the games they missed the prior week. Jason Krizan and Gustavo Nunez both got into six games for their Estrellas squad, with Krizan going 6-for-23 with a home run, and Nunez hitting 5-for-19 and swiping three bases. Jairo Labourt lowered his ERA to 2.57 with a single scoreless inning, while Cory Riordan got into four games, and he didn’t give up a run despite scattering five hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings. Lefty specialist Edward Paredes signed with the organization on Thursday, and he managed to pitch twice over the weekend, giving up just one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - A couple rainouts and league-wide days off on Monday and Tuesday meant there wasn’t a whole lot of action for Tigers farmhands last week. Infielders David Gonzalez (0-for-3) and Harold Castro (0-for-2) both played just once, and Castro is now mired in a 2-for-31 slump over his last ten games, so his Leones likely aren’t eager to get him more playing time. Relievers Arcenio Leon and Ruben Alaniz combined to toss 2 2/3 innings, but the star of the week was once again William Cuevas, the recently signed righty. Cuevas threw six shutout innings to pick up his third consecutive win, and his league-leading sixth overall, and lower his league-best ERA to 2.08.

Roberto Clemente League - Speedy outfielder Ismael Salgado had his busiest week of the year in Puerto Rico, though it was far from productive. The 23-year-old went 1-for-13 with a run scored, three strikeouts, and two stolen bases for the first-place Cangrejeros de Santurce.

Australian Baseball League - The third week of action in Australia saw another impressive performance from Jack O’Loughlin. The precocious lefty doesn’t turn 17 until March, but he’s done a good job of avoiding damage in his first three pro starts. Last week he worked five scoreless innings without walking anyone to lower his ERA to 2.13. Things weren’t quite as exciting at the plate, as outfielder Ulrich Bojarski followed a terrific week with a real dud, going 0-for-12 with four strikeouts. Third baseman Zac Shepherd broke out of his slump a bit, going 3-for-12 with a triple, a homer, and four RBI, but he struck out five more times, and owns a K rate of almost 40% through his first 12 games.

Baseball Parallel League (Liga Paralela) - Rain took two games away from the Detroit Liga Paralela squad, and they went 1-2 in the remaining three contests. Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Zulia saw the club bang out four runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead, and converted infielder Steven Fuentes worked a scoreless bottom frame to pick up his first career save. Unfortunately they ran into a hot Bravos/Caribes club on Friday and dropped both games of a doubleheader, falling 11-0 and 10-4. They now own a 10-22-2 record, and they have been outscored 185 to 131 on the season.
