Detroit Tigers Winter Ball: Daniel Stumpf Grinding

The minor league season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - The Dominican League regular season comes to a close in nine days, but the most noteworthy news for Tigers fans came off the field, when two LIDOM participants changed MLB organizations. The Tigers acquired left-handed reliever Daniel Stumpf in the Rule 5 draft, and then lost left-handed reliever Edward Paredes in the minor-league portion of the draft. Stumpf made one appearance last week, retiring the only two batters he faced to lower his Dominican ERA to 1.59. The only other org pitcher to see action was Cory Riordan, who tossed 1 1/3 innings and gave up his first run of the season. The wasn’t much action at the plate, with Jason Krizan going 1-for-16 with a double in five games, and Gustavo Nunez going 5-for-20 with four runs scored in six contests.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The Rule 5 affected the Venezuelan league as well, with the Tigers grabbing 26-year-old pitcher Sean Donatello from the Marlins in the minor-league portion of the draft. The ground ball specialist pitched twice last week, tossing three scoreless innings and picking up his third win in just six outings. A handful of other pitchers made scoreless appearances, including Arcenio Leon (1 2/3IP, SV), Paul Voelker (2IP, 2K), and Angel Nesbitt (1IP). There was far less action at the plate, though, with Harold Castro going 2-for-5 in three games, and David Gonzalez serving as a defensive replacement in three contests and walking in his lone plate appearance.

Roberto Clemente League - Outfielder Ismael Salgado continues to be the lone Tigers presence in the Roberto Clemente league, and last week he went 1-for-2 in limited action down in Puerto Rico.

Australian Baseball League - The two Tigers hitters in Australia continue to struggle at the dish, with Ulrich Bojarski going 1-for-9 and Zac Shepherd going just 1-for-12 with five strikeouts. Both rank in the bottom ten in the ABL in batting average, though Shepherd does have the third most walks in the league. It’s a different story on the mound, where wunderkind Jack O’Loughlin continues to limit damage. He made his fourth outing of the season last week, giving up just one run on five hits and striking out three over five innings. The 16-year-old has given up his share of hits (20 in 17 2/3 innings), but his 2.04 ERA is the fifth best in the league. Not bad for a 16-year-old.

Baseball Parallel League (Liga Paralela) - The Detroit Liga Paralela squad eked out a 3-2 win over Caracas on Monday thanks to some strong pitching from Ronaldo Lopez and a big day at the plate from catcher Arvicent Perez. But two of their games were suspended, and they were blown out in their other two contests, losing 7-1 to Aragua, and 14-4 to Lara, bringing their season record to 11-24-2.
