Detroit Tigers Winter Ball: Juan Perez Good Week

The minor league season may be over, but that doesn't mean the games stop. Dozens of players from each organization head across the globe to continue honing their craft. Here's how Tigers players are faring in various fall and winter leagues.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - Four Tigers minor leaguers continue to play regularly in the Dominican, and their two teams appear headed for a matchup in the finals. Jason Krizan (4-for-12, 2R) Jairo Labourt (3G, 2IP, 3K), and Cory Riordan (2 2/3, L, 3ER) all play for the 7-8 Gigantes, who are tied for 2nd place. Meanwhile, the first place Aguilas continue to be led by Juan Perez, who had a monster week, going 8-for-11 with three walks, a triple, two RBIs, a stolen base, and five runs scored. His .462 batting average leads the league by nearly 90 points.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The LVBP playoffs have reached the semifinal stage, and only two Tigers minor leaguers are still figuring into games. Recently signed first baseman Sean Halton went 3-for-7 with a walk and three strikeouts for his Bravos de Margarita, but they lost their series in seven games, so his winter league appears to be finished. Waldis Joaquin’s Caribes de Anzoategui are still playing, however, and the 30-year-old Dominican native threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings last week, though he gave up a hit and three walks without recording a strikeout.

Roberto Clemente League - It’s the same old story for outfielder Ismael Salgado, who turned 23 last week, and his Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rico. He got into two games, but didn’t get an at-bat or figure into the scoring in any way. His team is currently tied 1-1 in the PWL finals.

Mexican Pacific League - The Tigers keep adding minor leaguers who happen to be playing in the Mexican League. Last week they signed first baseman Efren Navarro, who then went 1-for-5 with three walks, and outfielder Jim Adduci, who didn’t see any game action. Meanwhile, last week’s star Quincy Latimore had another strong game, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, but his Mayos de Navojoa lost their series 4-2, so his season is done. On the mound, veteran lefty Travis Blackley fell to 0-3 in the postseason after giving up seven runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Australian Baseball League - Third baseman Zac Shepherd didn’t play for the third consecutive week, but the three other Tigers minor leaguers in Australia saw game action, led by Ulrich Bojarski, who continued his recent hot streak. The 18-year-old outfielder went 6-for-14 at the dish with a double, a rare walk, and two more stolen bases, and he has raised his batting average 48 points in the last four games. On the mound Warwick Saupold picked up his third save in four chances with a perfect inning that lasted just seven pitches, while the precocious Jack O’Loughlin was brilliant again, striking out six and giving up just three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings.
