Detroit Tigers Winter Ball: Championship Season

After three months of offseason action, the winter leagues are finally winding down. Pitchers and catchers report to MLB camp in about a month, but there’s still business to be done, and there are still a handful of Tigers minor leaguers playing in meaningful games.

Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) - The LIDOM championship series began on Thursday, pitting Juan Perez’s Aguilas Cibaenas against the Tigres del Licey. The best-of-nine series is knotted at two games apiece, with Perez going 5-for-18 with five runs scored thus far. Three other players saw action early in the week, though their squads were unable to make it to the finals. Jason Krizan went 2-for-7 with a walk in his final two games, while Cory Riordan gave up three runs on five hits in three innings of work, and Jairo Labourt worked a scoreless inning, striking out two.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League - The LVBP playoffs have also reached the championship series, but unfortunately no Tigers minor leaguers are taking part in the matchup between the Aguilas del Zulia and the Cardenales de Lara. Reliever Arcenio Leon is on the Aguilas, but he hasn’t pitched. Before the finals began reliever Waldis Joaquin did all he could to help his Caribes de Anzoategui make the finals, making two scoreless appearances and striking out two, but his squad still fell to Zulia. He does finish the offseason with the lowest playoff ERA, however, at 1.04.

Roberto Clemente League - Ismael Salgado’s Cangrejeros de Santurce are currently tied 3-3 in the PWL championship, but the 23-year-old outfielder once again didn’t figure into any game action.

Mexican Pacific League - The Mexican Pacific League kicked off its championship series on Saturday, but again no Tigers are participating. Outfielder Efren Navarro (2-for-16, 4 walks) and pitcher Travis Blackley (3 1/3IP, 2ER) both played last week for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, but their club failed to make the finals after falling 4-3 in a 16-inning game seven heartbreaker.

Australian Baseball League - It was a relatively light week in Australia with Zac Shepherd still out of action, and lefty sensation Jack O'Loughlin off pitching for Australia’s U18 squad (where he struck out eight over four scoreless innings). Outfielder Ulrich Bojarski did get into four games, going 4-for-19 with his 3rd home run of the season, and his sixth stolen base (in eight tries), but he also struck out five more times, giving him 36 punchouts against just two walks. Veteran Warwick Saupold, meanwhile, had a week he’d like to forget, recording just one out and picking up losses after giving up walk-off home runs in both of his appearances. Ouch.
