Johnson, 'pen lead Tigers to 3-1 victory

On Sunday afternoon, the Tigers pitching staff stepped up and shut down the potent Ranger lineup, as the Tigers took 2 of 3 from the Rangers at CoPa in the weekend series. Jason Johnson saw his blister burst on his finger yet again, but not before he could give the Tigers 5 solid innings on the mound.

Jason Johnson started the season off with 6 shutout innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on opening day. Since then, Johnson has gone 0-5 and battled the reoccurring blister on a finger on his throwing hand. The bliser burst yet again on Sunday, but not before Johnson gave the Tigers 5 solid innings of work. Over those 5 innings, Johnson allowed 1 run while striking out 7. From there, the Tiger bullpen took over, pitching 4 innings of shutout baseball, capped off by a perfect 9th by Ugueth Urbina for his 6th save.

On the other side, Ryan Drese still had a very good outing for the Rangers despite getting his first loss of the season. Drese went 6 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs. Three Ranger relievers shut the Tigers out the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done.

Omar Infante is taking full advantage of the injury to 2B Fernando Vina, as he launched his 2nd home run of the season going 2-for-3. OF Alex Sanchez continues his offensive terror, getting another 3 hits off Ranger pitchers. Texas' lone run came off a Gerald Laird double.

Once again, the Tigers have moved back to within a game of .500 with the win. The Tigers are off on Monday before heading off on their second west coast trip of the month. Their next game is at Oakland on Tuesday night with the youngsters in a rematch of their game earlier this week - Jeremy Bonderman vs. Rich Harden. First pitch is set for 10:05pm EDT.
