Save one small stretch, and Jeremy Bonderman had an excellent game. Unfortunately, that one little stretch was a 4-run inning for the Mets, all with 2 outs. For the game, Bonderman went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs and striking out 7. He took the loss to fall to 5-6 on the year.
Opposing him, Steve Trachsel was, in one word, boring. His slow pace had the Tigers baffled, as the couldn't turn scoring threats into runs, the only run coming on a passed ball and a hustle play by Ivan Rodriguez. Trachsel got the win, his 7th of the year, for going 6 innings with 1 earned run.
The Tigers got a couple threats going, but could never convert any of them into a big inning. Carlos Guillen had a pair of hits for the Tigers, and Rodriguez had a hit, a run and 2 walks. For the Mets, Richard Hidalgo had a 2-run Home Run (his first as a Met), and 1B Eric Valent had another 2 RBI that came in the 4-run 4th inning.
The Tigers, back at 6 games under .500, now have an off day before starting a 3-game set in Kansas City. Mike Maroth will face Jimmy Gobble, with an 8:10 start time.
