The Tigers saw magic strike again, as the Tigers won their 5th in a row, and their 3rd in a row via a walk-off Home Run. Saturday was Eric Munson, Sunday was Carlos Pena, and Tuesday night it was Dmitri Young, who had a 2-run Home Run in the 11th inning to beat the Cleveland Indians. All this after Franklyn German blew a 2-run lead in the 9th inning, forcing the game into extra innings.
The Tigers are on a roll, although this time it took extra innings to keep it going.
Gary Knotts started the game and gave the Tigers 7 innings, giving 4 runs but turning over a 2-run lead to the bullpen. But as it has been with the Tigers, the bullpen couldn't hang on, again. Jamie Walker allowed a run in the 8th, and then in the 9th, after the Tiger offense got the run back, Franklyn German came in for the save opportunity with Ugueth Urbina unavailable, tending to a family emergency.
German walked the first batter he faced, then got to a full count against Ben Broussard before he gave up a game-tying 2-run Home Run.
The bullpen then was saved by Esteban Yan, who pitched 2 scoreless innings, and Craig Dingman, who chipped in another inning, before Dmitri Young ended it all with a 2-run Home Run.
Besides Young, Eric Munson had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4, including a 3-run Home Run and an RBI double. Bobby Higginson also awoke at the plate, launching his 3rd Home Run of the season.
Meanwhile, Victor Martinez is emerging as yet another Tiger killer, as he hit his 11th Home Run of the season, a 3-run blast off Knotts.
The Tigers and Indians go at it again Wednesday night, with Cliff Lee facing Nate Robertson at 7:05pm. A Tiger win will give them 6 in a row, and tie them for 3rd place in the AL Central.
