Twins outlast Tigers, 7-1

Mike Maroth had his best stuff to start the game, but that faded in the 7th inning, highlighted by a Christian Guzman grand slam that put the game away for the most part, because the Tiger offense just couldn't get much going against journeyman Terry Mulholland, and then the Minnesota bullpen.

Mike Maroth retired the first 14 batters, everything was going well for the lefty. But then a single in the 5th, a run in the 6th, and an onslaught in the 7th. Maroth went 6 2/3 innings, with 6 earned runs and 3 strikeouts.

Terry Mulholland wasn't dominant by any means, but he did what he so often does - scatters hits while keeping his team in the game. Mulholland went 5 2/3 innings, with 1 earned run and 7 strikeouts. The Twins bullpen closed it out, only allowing a single the rest of the way.

Ivan Rodriguez provided the only run, a solo Home Run against Mulholland in the 6th inning. Omar Infante, who played a little bit of Center Field after Craig Monroe left with a pulled hamstring (he's day to day), also had 2 hits.

Christian Guzman was obviously the Twins star at the plate, with the grand slam. Jacque Jones also had 2 hits and an RBI for the Twins.

Game 2 is again at the Metrodome at 8:10pm, with Gary Knotts facing Carlos Silva. The game is again televised on UPN-50.
