Blown save in 9th gives Royals 9-8 win

The Tigers offense did everything right on Tuesday night - giving the pitching staff plenty of run support - even fighting their way for an extra insurance run in the top of the 9th to give closer Ugueth Urbina a 2-run cushion to work with. But, like the pitchers before him, Urbina couldn't hold the lead, giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to lose it for Detroit.

It wasn't a good day for pitchers at Kaufman Stadium, as no one seemed to have much luck. Neither starter performed well - Jason Johnson allowed 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings, while Brian Anderson carried an even worse stat line, giving up 7 runs in 5 innings of work.

Even the game winner, Jeremy Affeldt, allowed a run in his 1 inning of work, a 2-out RBI double by Carlos Pena to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead.

Ugueth Urbina then came in to close it out, but it went much the same as the first 8 1/2 innings went for the pitchers; bad.

Urbina allowed a leadoff hit, then walked a man, and then a sacrifice bunt turned into a hit when it was misplayed by Brandon Inge and Urbina, which loaded the bases. A single and a fielder's choice tied the game at 8, and then a sacrifice fly brought the winning run home, as Nook Logan's throw from Center was just a hair too late.

Dmitri Young had a big game at the plate in the loss, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, including his 11th Home Run of the year. Ivan Rodriguez also had a solid game, going 4-for-4 with 3 runs and an RBI. Omar Infante and Pena each had 2 hits also.

Abraham Nunez had a big game for the Royals, going 4-for-5 with 3 runs and an RBI. Desi Relaford also went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. Matt Stairs and John Buck each had 2 hits.

The series finale comes Wednesday night at 8:10pm, when Mike Maroth faces Zach Greinke.
