Greinke shuts out Tigers 1-0

Some days, no matter how well you pitch, you can't pull out a victory. That sentiment expresses exactly how Mike Maroth feels on Wednesday night after the 1-0 defeat he took from Kansas City. Despite giving up just 1 run over the course of the game, Maroth took the loss because the Tigers' offense couldn't figure out a way to solve Zack Greinke.

Zack Greinke was on his game on Wednesday night. And unfortunately, despite pitching very well, Mike Maroth just wasn't good enough.

Maroth went the distance, allowing 1 run on 6 hits, including a walk and 8 strikeouts. Maroth now sits at 10-10 for the season. It's not a great record, but it certainly beats the 9-21 he finished last year at.

As for the Royals, Greinke simply couldn't be stopped. He pitched 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits with 5 strikeouts, all the while never allowing the Tigers to get a serious scoring opportunity.

Jeremy Affeldt finished off the game, pitching a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts for his 9th save of the year.

Not much was doing at the plate for Detroit, as they managed just 4 hits, and no runs. Craig Monroe did manage 2 hits though.

For the Royals, not much to report either; although Abraham Nunez did driving the game-winning run (the lone run of the game).

The Tigers are now off on Thursday, before starting a new series at Tampa on Friday night. Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled to face rookie sensation Scott Kazmir at 7:05pm.
