The Tigers may have won, but the West Michigan Whitecaps didn't have the same fortune, as they kicked off the Midwest League Championship Series with a 10-5 loss to Kane County. Virgil Vasquez struggled from the start, as he was not able to duplicate his first round success, and while the offense provided some support, it wasn't enough.
Virgil Vasquez has been West Michigan's most consistent starter this season, but on Tuesday night, when the team really needed a big game, Vasquez came up short.
He struggled from the start and was chased from the game in the midst of an 8-run 3rd inning. Vasquez made it just 2 1/3 innings, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and no strikeouts. He fell to 1-1 in the playoffs.
Brian Rogers gave up another 2 runs in that 3rd inning, and Eulogio Delacruz gave up an unearned run in the 7th as the two closed it out.
At the plate, Kelly Hunt and Garth McKinney had Home Runs, but it wasn't enough to get a win. Kody Kirkland also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The two teams face off again on Wednesday night in Kane County. No starter has been announced, but expect Chris Steinborn to get the ball on the mound, with it being his turn in the rotation.
