With the two new players being added to the club, the Tigers have now added 4 players to the roster via waiver claims. On top of Dewayne Wise and Byron Gettis, they also added OF Alexis Gomez (also from Kansas City) and Pitcher Colby Lewis from Texas.
It is expected that both Wise and Gomez will be able to compete for a big league job come Spring. In 162 at bats, Wise hit .228 with 6 Home Runs and 17 RBI for the Braves, but was obviously considered dispensable as they left him available for anyone to claim.
The team doesn't quite expect as much from Gettis right away, but believes he could be a big contributor down the road. Because he still has an option left, look for him to start the season as one of the Toledo's starting Outfielders. He played just 21 games in 2004 for Kansas City, but in 2003 he was their Minor League Player of the Year.
Lewis is coming off a torn labrum, and may or may not be ready for Spring Training. However, the Tigers elected to take a chance because of his impressive repertoire. Much like Jeremy Bonderman, he moved quickly through the system, using his mid-90's fastball and power curveball to dominate minor league hitters.
With the additions, the Tigers now have every spot on their 40-man roster filled. Expect that to change though, as it's likely the Tigers will attempt to steal another prospect via the Rule V draft, much like they did with Chris Shelton this past year, and Wilfredo Ledezma, Matt Roney and Chris Spurling two season's ago.
With the addition of the 3 Outfielders, the Tigers now have 9 on their 40-man roster - a number likely to shrink before Spring Training rolls around. Who is likely to be trimmed is unknown at this time however.
