ChiSox Claim Playoff Spot with Win

On average, the Tigers would happily accept a split over a four game series against the division leaders. Unfortunately, that doesn't factor in the Tigers fighting for nothing but pride, trying to play the spoiler role and keep the White Sox out of the playoffs.

Detroit Tigers - 71-88, 4th in AL Central
In normal circumstances, the Tigers wouldn't be hurt by a pair of losses against the division leading Chicago White Sox, the same White Sox that have carried the best record in the American League for almost all of the season. With a 4-2 victory on Thursday afternoon, the White Sox claimed a playoff spot and at least a share of the AL Central crown. Jason Grilli took the loss, allowing four runs over seven innings of work. The Tigers headed into the seventh inning with a 4-0 deficit, but they refused to give up, managing a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth. But that wasn't enough as Chicago popped the champagne in the visitor's locker room. Placido Polanco went 2-for-5 with a run for the Tigers, while Brandon Inge was a perfect 4-for-4. The Tigers move on to their final series of the year against the Minnesota Twins. Mike Maroth faces Francisco Liriano at 8:10pm.
