2005 Oneonta Pitchers Review

When scouting a player, teams don't just take into account a player's raw stats, but also his peripheral stats, the stats behind the stats, so to speak. Take a look inside to see the breakdown of the 2005 Oneonta Tigers pitchers who had at least 30 innings of work, and their peripheral stats.

Burke Badenhop made his living for the O-Tigers by playing the control game, and was very successful in doing so. Badenhop didn't strike out a ton, but he didn't walk many either, keeping the opposition off the basepaths, in turn limiting their ability to score runs on him. Unfortunately at 22, Badenhop did exactly what he was expected, so while the numbers were good across the board, they were expected to be as such.

Jake Baxter - Right handed Reliever

Baxter was a decent reliever for the O-Tigers, coming in and doing an adequate job for them. Baxter was only outstanding when it came to his ability to strike out the opposition, while the rest of his numbers were serviceable, but certainly not impressive. He'll be useful for the organization providing depth in future years.

Fragoso was impressive pitching out of the bullpen for Oneonta, so impressive that they elected to move him to the rotation, where he continued to shine. Not only did Fragoso sport a very good ERA, but the rest of his numbers were very good across the board. He struck out plenty, avoided bats and didn't allow a single home run ball. He still struggled with his control at times and with maturation will hopefully improve his walk rates, but a solid season from the then 20 year old.

Dan Konecny - Right handed Pitcher

In what was obviously an extremely poor season, Konecny was ineffective in pretty much every facet of the game. His ERA was poor, he allowed too many baserunners, he struggled with his control, and couldn't even strike many batters out. This is likely a big reason why the Tigers elected to release Konecny at the conclusion of the season.

Moscoso another player who just recently celebrated a birthday, turning 22, was a solid member of the Oneonta rotation. Moscoso wasn't dominant, but he was above average in almost every category, with the lone exception of being a bit prone to give up the long ball. Moscoso will also help to provide depth to the organization in future years.

Matt Norfleet - Right handed Reliever

The reliever proved to be a reliable option out of the bullpen, as was evidenced by his rather impressive batting average against. Norfleet parlayed that into a very solid ERA, however, Norfleet could still have shown better when it came to his control, striking out a decent amount of batters, but not having the same success when it came to avoiding walks, hence is solid but not spectacular WHIP. Norfleet is also 22, so while his season was nice, he's not looked on to be a top prospect.

Matt O'Brien - Right handed Starter

O'Brien impressed in his debut with the organization, emerging as one of the most reliable starters for Oneonta. O'Brien was at his best simply keeping opponents off the bases, proving to be very difficult to hit, as well as not issuing many free passes. O'Brien isn't a big strikeout pitcher, and gave up a few long balls, but the bigger concern is likely that O'Brien has already turned 23, making him rather old for the New York Penn League. It'll be up to him to try and move quickly and avoid losing any prospect status purely because of age.

Timothy Robertson - Right handed Reliever

Robertson was yet another rather reliable reliever for the O-Tigers, sporting a very good 2.65 ERA. Robertson wasn't spectacular anywhere else, but in the end, what's most important for him was keeping runs from crossing home plate. Of course, Robertson is already 22 and will turn 23 in December, so he's older for the league as well, which again will likely limit his status as a prospect.

Jay Sborz - Right handed Pitcher

Sborz actually came up just short of the innings requirement, but because he also made a handful of appearances for West Michigan, and because of his high draft status a few years ago, he gets examined here too. And in the examination, it's easy to see why there aren't many currently excited about Sborz's future. Sure, he has nice strikeout numbers, but they are not as good as they have been, and his control seems to be worsening as he actually walked more batters than he struck out. He's still hard to hit, but if he's giving away a base an inning just via walks, he's on a tough uphill battle.

Sendy Vasquez - Right handed Pitcher

Vasquez was transitioned to the rotation midseason where he excelled for Oneonta, compiling a 7-0 record. His ERA was solid, as were his strikeout numbers, but he stilled a few too many opponents, largely offsetting his impressive .218 batting average against. But again, the age factor comes into play as Vasquez is already 23 years of age and will need to see his timetable move quickly.
