Winter League Update: 12/26

A handful of Tigers have been getting work in throughout the Caribbean as they stay sharp in preparation for the 2006 season. TigsTown updates you on the performance of all the Tigers playing throughout the winter ball leagues.

Outfielder Luis Sabino had been playing a bit down in Puerto Rico for Mayaguez, however he hasn't played at all recently, likely signaling that he's gotten the work in that he wanted to and is now resting in preparation for spring training.

Mike Bumatay continues to pitch for Aragua down in Venezuela, continuing to have success. Unfortunately, Bumatay got roughed up in the last week, as he saw his ERA jump from 0.79 all the way up to 3.38. However, when being used such as Bumatay is as a lefty specialist out of the ‘pen, it's easy to have one bad outing inflate an ERA, as he's pitched just 13 1/3 innings in his 32 appearances. Bumatay has continued to strike out more than a batter an inning as well.

Wilfredo Ledezma put together another solid outing this past week, as he's carried an ERA of 3.46 in seven appearances. In his appearance he went 5 1/3 innings, unfortunately, he didn't do much to improve on his walk and strikeout numbers, where he only struck out one batter while walking one as well, leaving him with 16 walks and just 12 strikeouts in 26 innings.

Juan Francia has begun to receive more playing time for Oriente, as he's received 13 at bats over the past week, bringing his total up to 39. The increase in playing time is likely due to the fact that he continues to produce when he plays. Francia is carrying a .385 batting average, including a .461 slugging percentage.

Omar Infante has had a bit of an up and down offseason for Oriente, as he's remained the team's everyday shortstop, but hasn't been consistent in his production. In 161 at bats, Infante now has a .267 average, including 12 doubles and five home runs. He drove in just one run for the week though as his power numbers have taken a dip recently; his slugging percentage fell to .435 from .466 at last week's end.

Also with Oriente, John Ennis has gotten some more work in out of the bullpen for the team. Ennis has now made seven appearances, accumulating 5 2/3 innings. He's posted a 3.18 ERA, with five strikeouts and three walks.

Finally, in the Dominican league, Alexis Gomez has continued to excel, with a .301 average in 163 at bats. Gomez has a .442 slugging percentage, as he leads the team with 14 doubles and 26 RBI. Gomez could stand to be a bit more patient still, with just 12 walks so far in the winter season.

Gilberto Mejia has started to get some playing time as well for Aguilas. Mejia has received just 16 at bats, but does have a .313 average in that time, including a double.

And finally, after a rough start, Roman Colon is putting things together nicely for Escogido, as he's lowered his ERA nearly three full points, as he's brought it down to 3.57 from 6.17. Another very bright sign has been his continued impeccable control, where he has 24 strikeouts and just three walks in 22 2/3 innings. Colon will hope to translate that success into wins, as he's currently without one in seven appearances.
