Background
The Tigers signed Randor Bierd as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. After playing a couple of seasons on the Dominican Summer League team, Randor came stateside in 2004. The Tigers have frequently bounced Bierd around throughout the system, seeing him make starts with the GCL Tigers, Lakeland, West Michigan, and even Erie. Bierd has demonstrated excellent aptitude to the various challenges, and the Tigers are likely to continue being aggressive with his assignments. Combined between three levels in 2005, Bierd posted a 3.58 ERA in 105+ innings, before being shut down with arm problems.

Scouting Report
The Tigers signed Bierd as a raw, skinny, intelligent pitcher, hoping he would make the necessary adjustments to become a quality pitcher. Since coming stateside and working on his strength and conditioning, Bierd has taken well to coaching and has begun to develop as the organization had originally hoped. As he gains strength, Randor continues to add velocity, comfortably sitting in the 92-94 range, and touching 96 on rare occasions. Bierd's fastball has reasonable sinking action that he continues to refine for increased consistency. Along with his power fastball, Bierd has a full compliment of pitches, including a curve, change, and slider. All three pitches lack polish and control, but he has begun to make progress in those regards. Bierd is an average athlete, but uses his intelligence to make up for anything he lacks physically. Bierd has the potential to be a very solid middle of the rotation starter, particularly if he improves his consistency and stamina.

Health Record
Bierd was shut down in the season's second half as a result of arm soreness. It was reported that he was feeling discomfort in his elbow. At this point, he has not undergone surgery. The Tigers will be extremely cautious with him to start the 2006 season.

The Future
Provided his arm is well enough to start the season, there is a very good chance he could be challenged with a full time assignment to AA-Erie. Despite his relative inexperience, the 21-year old Bierd posted a 3.12 ERA in 17.1 innings with the Seawolves, demonstrating the promise the Tigers have seen in him all along. Health will ultimately determine Bierd's success of failure within the Tigers system. If he can remain off the operating table, he could move quickly and earn a shot on the Detroit staff as soon as 2007. The more likely scenario, considering the Tigers relative depth of pitching prospects, is that Bierd gets a shot in 2008, if he's not included in a trade to benefit the big league club first.
