'Caps Triumph in Opener (9/6 Recaps)

The West Michigan Whitecaps shut down Fort Wayne in the series opener on Wednesday, with help from Mike Hollimon, who blasted a pair of home runs. Toledo meanwhile was shut out by Charlotte in their series opener.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – CHARLOTTE 5, TOLEDO 0
1-0 Charlotte, Best of 5
The Toledo Mud Hens were blanked by the visiting Charlotte Knights 5-0, in the opening game of their semifinal series on Wednesday night. Starter Corey Hamman (0-1) surrendered all five Charlotte runs on just four hits, giving up two walks, collecting only one strikeout. After the damage was completed through the third and fourth innings, middle relievers Steve Green, Lance Davis, Preston Larrison and john Ennis combined for four scoreless innings for Toledo who failed to score a run in the game. David Espinosa was the only Mud Hen to reach extra bases with a one-out triple in the fifth inning. Game two of the series goes Thursday evening at fifth Third Field beginning at 7 p.m.

The 'Caps got their playoff run off to a good start with an 8-3 victory over Ft. Wayne on Wednesday night. Burke Badenhop led the way on the mound, giving up three runs over seven innings to earn the win for the ‘Caps. Meanwhile, Mike Hollimon was the star at the plate; he blasted two home runs and drove in three. Cameron Maybin also added two hits and two RBI, while Will Rhymes had three hits hitting an uncharacteristic sixth in the lineup. West Michigan will try and close out the short quarterfinal series on Thursday evening back home at Fifth Third Ballpark, with the first pitch set for 7:00pm.

SS-A Oneonta Tigers – ONEONTA 3, HUDSON VALLEY 1
39-34, 2nd in Stedler division

Oneonta picked up another close win on Wednesday evening, topping Hudson Valley 3-1. Tom Thornton was excellent on the mound once again, but picked up just his second win on the season – he gave up one unearned run over seven innings. Jonah Nickerson came on in relief to close it out, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, Brandon Timm and Casper Wells each had a pair of hits for the O-Tigers, and Jordan Newton blasted a solo home run. Oneonta will close out its season on Thursday against Hudson Valley at 6:05pm.

The GCL Tigers closed the season as North division champs, but fell in the playoffs to the GCL Dodgers.
