Clean Sweep on the Farm (5/25 Recaps)

The big league club didn't fare so well, but all four minor league teams picked up victories on Friday evening. All four offense provided plenty of support, but the organization got great pitching at every start, including outstanding outings from Jair Jurrjens and Luke French.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – TOLEDO 8, COLUMBUS 1
25-23, 3rd in West division
The ‘Hens picked up a win over Columbus, pulling out an 8-1 victory. Ron Chiavacci picked up just his second win of the year; giving up one earned over seven innings of work, including three strikeouts. Every member of the lineup had at least one hit, while both Ryan Raburn and Dane Sardinha drove in a pair of runs. RHP Dennis Tankersley (4-2, 3.81) is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday at 7pm against Columbus.

AA Erie SeaWolves – ERIE 5, AKRON 1
24-21, 2nd in Southern division
The Erie SeaWolves grabbed the lead and did not let it slip away as they beat the Akron Aeros 5-1. Erie went ahead 2-0 in the fifth on RBI singles by Clete Thomas and Jeff Larish and coasted the rst of the way. Jackson Melian added a bases clearing double in the seventh to complete the scoring. Starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens improved his record to 2-2 going seven innings and allowing only one unearned run on seven hits and one walk while striking out six. Danny Zell pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out three. Jackson Melian led the offense going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Andres Torres and Erick Almonte each had two hits. Torres was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Almonte was 2-for-5. The SeaWolves will take on the Akron Aeros on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The pitching matchup is Eulogio De La Cruz (4-3, 3.33 ERA) for Erie and Scott Lewis (1-2, 3.76 ERA) for Akron.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – LAKELAND 5, PALM BEACH 0
22-25, 5th in West division
The Flying Tigers defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals Friday night, 5-0. Starting pitcher Luke French pitched eight innings and surrendered zero runs. He was then relieved by Ricky Steik who closed out the game allowing only one hit in the ninth. On the offensive side, Adrian Casanova batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mark Haske and Ovandy Suero also registered an RBI each. The two teams will meet again Saturday night at 6:00 PM. Eleazar Aponte will make the start for the Flying Tigers, while Palm Beach's starter has yet to be announced.

A West Mich. Whitecaps – W. MICH. 6, FT. WAYNE 0
25-20, 3rd in Eastern division

It took a little while for the offense to get going, but once they did, they gave the Whitecaps' pitchers plenty of support in their 6-0 victory. Jeff Gerbe got the start and pitched four shutout innings, but Josh Rainwater got the win in relief, pitching four more shutout innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out four. Jeramy Laster and Scott Sizemore each had a home run in the win, while Deik Scram, Ryan Strieby and Santo de Leon each had two hits and an RBI. The ‘Caps take on Fort Wayne again on Saturday at 4:00pm.
