Offenses Explode on Sunday (5/27 Recaps)

Both Toledo and West Michigan came to hit at the plate on Sunday, as both teams saw their run totals reach double digits on Sunday. The 'Hens were led by Ryan Raburn, who hit for the cycle for the club, while everyone in the 'Caps starting lineup got at least one hit.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – TOLEDO 14, COLUMBUS 5
26-24, 2nd in West division
Toledo jumped all over Columbus on Sunday as the ‘Hens coasted to an impressive 14-5 win. Yorman Bazardo pitched well as the starter, giving up just one run over six innings. Meanwhile, Roman Colon made his return to the mound as he works his way back. He struggled some, allowing two runs in an inning of work. But the real story on the day was the offense, putting up runs in each of the first four innings to stake the club to a 12-0 lead. David Espinosa, Mike Hessman and Ryan Raburn all homered (Raburn hit for the cycle), while Chris Shelton and Kevin Hooper added two hits apiece. Corey Hamman is schedule to take the mound against Roger Clemens in what will likely be his final rehab start. Game time at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is set for 5:00pm.

AA Erie SeaWolves – AKRON 5, ERIE 3
24-23, 3rd in Southern division
The offensive woes continued for the Erie SeaWolves who managed only five hits in a 5-3 loss to the Akron Aeros. Starting pitcher Eddie Bonine suffered the loss allowing seven hits and four earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings. Andrew Kown pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run before Matt Rusch came in and shut down the Aeros in the final 1 2/3 innings. Rusch did not allow a run or a hit but he walked two and struck out one. Once again Jackson Melian led the way offensively for the SeaWolves going 1-for-2 with a RBI double in the seventh that scored Kody Kirkland. Kirkland was 0-for-1 but had two RBI's on sacrifice flies. Monday will be the final game of the four game series between the Erie SeaWolves and Akron Aeros. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Dallas Trahern will pitch for Erie and Chuck Lofgren is the scheduled starter for the Aeros.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers –PALM BEACH 3, LAKELAND 2
22-27, t-4th in West division
The Flying Tigers fell to the Palm Beach Cardinals Sunday afternoon, 3-2. Starting pitcher Eleazar Aponte pitched six innings and gave up zero runs. Brendan Wise then relieved Aponte, pitching two scoreless innings. Freddy Dolsi entered the game in the ninth to register the save but instead surrendered three runs and was credited with the loss. On the offensive side, Ovandy Suero batted 2-for-4 with one RBI. The remaining Lakeland run was scored off of a Palm Beach error. The Flying Tigers have Monday off and will travel to Tampa Tuesday to play the Yankees at 7:00 PM. Starting pitchers have yet to be announced.

A West Mich. Whitecaps – W. MICH. 10, FT. WAYNE 2
26-21, 2nd in Eastern division

It was a welcome return to Fifth Third Ballpark for the Whitecaps Sunday as the offense exploded for 10 runs on 17 hits in a 10-2 victory over Fort Wayne. Five of the first six West Michigan batters singled in the first, resulting in an early 5-0 lead. Single runs were added in the second on a Ryan Strieby home run and the sixth on an Audy Ciriaco single that scored Brandon Timm. Then once again in the eighth inning, five of the first six batters singled to bring in three more runs. Timm led the offensive production with three hits (two doubles), two RBI and two runs scored. Seven different Whitecaps scored at least one run, and six had multi-hit games. Not to be lost in all of the offense, Angel Castro (4-3, 2.05 ERA) pitched eight innings of shutout ball, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out three. The 'Caps finish their series with Fort Wayne Monday with a 2:00 p.m. Memorial Day start.
