The report, originally stemming from the Asheville Citizen Times, has now been reported as well by WDFN 1130 The Fan and WXYT 1270, both of Detroit. The Detroit Tigers however have neither confirmed nor denied the report, and have made no mention of anyone being sent down.
Maybin, who spent the first half of the season in high-A Lakeland, has been in Double-A Erie for just a little over a week. Between the two levels, Maybin was hitting .316 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI. Much of that production has come just since his promotion to Erie, where his OPS is 1.588.
The call-up was necessary because the Tigers on Friday designated outfielder Craig Monroe for assignment. Monroe had seem himself fall out of favor as he couldn't rebound from a poor start. Monroe was hitting .222 with 11 home runs and 55 RBI.
As another move, the Tigers optioned infielder Omar Infante to Triple-A Toledo, and recalled infielder Ramon Santiago. Santiago will now take over the role as the team's main utility infielder.
