'Wolves Knocked Out (9/8 Recaps)

A day after the Toledo Mud Hens were knocked out of the playoffs, the Erie SeaWolves suffered the same fate, falling to Akron on Saturday. On the bright side, the Whitecaps got their semifinal round off on a high note, with a 4-0 shutout victory over South Bend.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – END OF SEASON
Durham Wins Series 3-0
The Mud Hens lost in the opening round of the Governor's Cup playoffs, bringing their season to a close.

AA Erie SeaWolves – AKRON 8, ERIE 6
Akron Wins Series 3-1
The Erie SeaWolves season came to an abrupt end as they twice surrendered a four run lead to fall 8-6 to the Akron Aeros. The 'Wolves struck first in the game scoring three runs in the top of the first. After Clete Thomas popped out and Danny Worth struck out but reached base on a throwing error by the catcher Wyatt Toregas. Mike Hollimon hit a single to put runners on first and second for Jeff Larish. Larish responded with a double that scored Worth and Hollimon. The' Wolves added another run in the fourth to go ahead 4-0 before Akron cut the lead in half on a Michael Aubrey home run. The 'Wolves went back up by four as Clete Thomas led off the fifth with a single and Mike Hollimon hit a two run home run to center field. Akron exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth an inning that was capped by a second home run for Michael Aubrey. The Aeros went to the bullpen in the sixth and Erie never got another hit in the 8-6 loss. The Erie SeaWolves lost the series with the Akron Aeros and the season is now over. Akron will go on to play in the Eastern League Finals.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – END OF SEASON
24-46, 6th in West division
Lakeland wrapped up the season in last place, not qualifying for the Florida State League playoffs.

A West Mich. Whitecaps – W. MICH. 4, S. BEND 0
1-0, Best of Three Series

Jeff Gerbe tossed 7 2/3 innings of three hit, no run baseball Saturday in leading West Michigan to a 4-0 victory over South Bend in the first game of the Midwest League Eastern Division Championship Series. Casey Fien pitched 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief with three strike outs to combine with Gerbe for the shut out. Jeramy Laster led the offense once again, hitting a lead off single and eventually scoring on a Jordan Newton ground out in the second and belting a two run double in the third. Santo De Leon added another run in the sixth on a single to score Ryan Strieby. The Whitecaps will look for the second straight playoff sweep Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is 6:00 p.m., with Charles Furbush scheduled to start against South Bend's Chase Christianson.
