TigsTown '07 Year in Review: Third Base

The Tigers might not be in need of a third baseman soon with Miguel Cabrera in place, but with free agency looming, there are no guarantees. Do the Tigers have any studs waiting in the wings that could step in?

Kody Kirkland has always hit for solid power when he makes contact, the problem has been and continues to be, making contact. Kirkland just barely kept his average above the Mendoza line, and struck out nearly once every three at bats. No matter how well he can drive the ball, until he can improve elsewhere, he'll struggle to move up the ladder in the organization.

After spending '06 with West Michigan, Middleton was pulled back and placed with Oneonta, where he had noticeably better results. Those results got Middleton up to average performance, now he'll need to continue improving to take things to the next level, especially by continuing to drive the ball while continuing to display improved patience.

After a disappointing start to the '07 season with Lakeland, Bourquin was pulled back and sent down to Oneonta, where he had a lot more success albeit against weaker competition, helping pull his season numbers up across the board. Being a third baseman, the team will need much more power out of him, but if he can keep up the .325/.418/.454 line from Oneonta, he'll definitely be back on the right track.

In his second season for the GCL, Carlos Ramirez took the next step in his career, putting up excellent stats, and earning a brief late season call-up to Lakeland. While his walk rates could improve, and he still struck out plenty, his power has left everyone impressed. Should he take the everyday job at third for the Whitecaps, it will be a key year for Ramirez to see if he can continue his power in the spacious park while improving the rest of his game.

De Leon hasn't been viewed as a top prospect, but still was the go to guy at third base for the Whitecaps, and has been steadily moving up the ladder in the organization. Of course, De Leon has shown little patience at the plate, and without any real power to speak of, De Leon has no strong calling card to point to, yet, with few other options, he's got a good chance at being the everyday third baseman for Lakeland.

When De Leon wasn't playing third, it was likely that Michael Bertram was, and with arguably better results. Strictly offensively speaking, while his average was slightly lower, his walk rate was slightly better, and he hit for a bit more pure power. In likely a similar situation as last year, Bertram will likely pick up for the slack behind De Leon.

At just 17 years of age, Torrealba showed excellent patience at the plate, but not as much as far as actual production from his bat. Considering his youth, Torrealba still has plenty of time to improve, and will likely do so working once again for the VSL Tigers.

In a very similar situation to Torrealba, Aguasvivas was just 17 years of age in his first taste of pro ball, with a tad more success. Aguasvivas took a good share of walks, and hit for a decent average, albeit with minimal power. He'll likely also be repeating rookie ball in the Dominican once again in '08.

In his second year for the Tigers rookie club in the Dominican, Soto put up better numbers than his rookie campaign, but is now battling Aguasvivas for playing time at the hot corner, and doesn't seem to be on track yet to move up and stateside. His walk rate was incredibly impressive, and he hit for a good amount of power though, so the Tigers will likely find him at bats, even if it means a third straight run in the Dominican.
