DSL Tigers Player of the Year: 2B Alexander Nunez
After signing in 2007, Nunez had to wait until this summer to make his professional debut; at which point he quickly showed what he could do by racing out to a .294/.385/.382 line in the season's first month. For the season, Nunez ranked second on the DSL roster in average at .269, while also getting on base in other ways with 25 walks to his credit. Nunez managed seven doubles, a triple, and a home run among his extra base hits for the year, and also swiped six bases along the way. As an 18-year old making his debut, Nunez's performance was enough to make observers take notice and imagine what could be in store for the slick fielder in the future.
DSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year: SP Marcos Nunez
Making it a Nunez-sweep for the DSL awards in 2008, Marcos absolutely dominated opposing hitters throughout much of the season. Things looked just fine after a first month that included a 3.60 ERA working mostly out of the bullpen, but that was just the beginning for Marcos this summer. Pitching almost exclusively in the rotation the rest of the way, Nunez posted ERAs of 1.50 and 0.69 in July and August, respectively. His strikeout rate also increased as the lanky right-hander harnessed his arm strength and further refined his curveball and change-up. With two DSL seasons under his belt, Marcos could be in line for a trip stateside for spring training in 2009, which could lead to some promising things in the Gulf Coast League next year.
