The Tigers were looking to go in a new direction with the pitching staff after letting go of pitching coach Chuck Hernandez and bullpen coach Jeff Jones. On Friday, they took a step in that direction, hiring Rick Knapp from the Minnesota Twins.
Knapp spent the previous 12 years as the Minnesota Twins' Minor League pitching coordinator. He originally joined the Twins in 1996 as the organization's rookie level pitching coach.
Knapp's biggest challenge will be adjusting to getting the best out of current, Major League pitchers as opposed to helping develop a crop of raw, young arms. There is also plenty of optimism about the potential philosophical changes Knapp can help bring to the organization.
Knapp has yet to comment specifically on the Tigers' pitchers or the staff or organization in general, only stating that he is extremely excited for his new role, and to join the organization.
