After four effective minor league starts, the Tigers have decided it's time to see if Dontrelle Willis' progress is really that.
Between four minor league starts (in addition to his rehab work in extended spring training), Dontrelle Willis posted a 3.86 ERA in 25 2/3 innings of work.
But possibly the best progress the Tigers saw in his rehab assignment was the return of his control, striking out 16 batters while walking nine. He also had favorable strikeout-to-pitch ratios in each of his appearances.
It is expected that Willis will take Zach Miner's place in the rotation. No word yet on who will be the odd-man out from the pitching staff and be sent down to Toledo.
As the Tigers got to delay all of their starters a day with Wednesday's rainout, the Tigers can reset the rotation by also taking advantage of Monday's off day. The Tigers had previously announced that they would be skipping Zach Miner's start anyway. At least through next Tuesday, the team will get the benefit of an eight man bullpen.
