The Mud Hens picked up where they left off before the All-Star break,as Toledo fell 12-5 to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Billy Buckner got the start and took the loss, unable to make it out of the first inning. He yielded nine runs on seven hits with two walks in 2/3 of an inning. Gilbert De La Vara tossed 4 1/3 innings after that, allowing just one unearned run, but the damage was already done. Will Rhymes had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a solo home run. Jeff Larish also added a solo blast, while Scott Sizemore chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
The SeaWolves also got the second half of the year started on a down note, falling 6-1 to Akron. Anthony Shawler got the start, giving up two runs in four innings of work for the loss. Justin Henry drove in Andy Bouchie for the team's only run.
The Whitecaps are just one game away from moving out of the cellar after a 7-1 win over Clinton on Thursday. Victor Larez turned in an excellent outing, tossing seven strong innings to earn the win. Larez gave up just one run on three hits while striking out five. Tony Plagman had three doubles and two RBI, while Clay Jones added three hits, two of which were doubles, and two RBI for the club. Avisail Garcia also added a pair of RBI.
The C-Tigers picked up a 5-0 shutout win over State College with the help of an outstanding showing from Clemente Mendoza. Mendoza went eight innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven to pick up his second win of the season. James Robbins led the charge at the plate, with a couple of hits including a double and three RBI.
The GCL Tigers lost another close battle with the GCL Braves, falling 2-1 in ten innings. Jeff Barfield was excellent as the starter, getting a no decision as he went eight innings, allowing a run on four hits with six strikeouts. Sean Finefrock took the loss in relief for allowing the winning run to score in the tenth. Patrick McKenna produced the club's only run via a solo home run.
The VSL Tigers fell to the VSL Mariners 5-2. Johan Belisario took the loss but pitched well, giving up a run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Erick Soto and Jesus Ustariz each drove in a run for the club in the loss.
