Mark Hamburger took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before tiring and giving up 3 hits. Logan Darnell, came in to relieve after Hamburger gave up a 2 run infield hit that plated two runs. Indy would score a couple more before it ended but the Red Wings had their hitting shoes on from the opening batter. Doug Bernier homered to lead off the game and the Wings never looked back.
Aaron Hicks homered in the 2nd for a 2-0 lead and the Wings broke it open with 4 two-out runs in the 5th. Final tonite was 11-4 as the Wings officially win the season series over the Indians for the first time since 2008. Hamburger picks up his 3rd win in 5 decisions since coming up from New Britain. Deibinson Romero batted 9th for the first time in his career and responded with 3 hits. He has been mired in a long slump.
Wings move 11 over .500 but was unable to gain ground on Pawtucket or Buffalo. However Syracuse lost in 10 innings so Rochester closes to 1 1/2 games of first place; they stay 1/2 behind Pawtucket for the wild card and they remain 2 ahead of hard charging Buffalo.
Clearly, no team can afford to lose too many more games down the stretch. Wings with 21 games to play.
They are now 4-4 on this extended roadtrip. They lost 2 to Lehigh; split 4 with Louisville and now have won 2 from Indy.
Trevor May was recalled today and will start against Oakland. Wings still hoping to pick up a hitter when Mauer returns. (he IS going to return.......right?
