WE interrupt our daily bashing of the Red Wings to report that Yohan Pino blew into town just in time to show the team what it takes to win a ballgame. Pino was magnificent for 7 innings allowing just 2 hits, no runs and fanning 5, while his teammates finally got off their collective butts and scored some runs.
Pino tired in the 8th, hitting the first hitter and then giving up a HR to Sandy Leon...his second homer in as many nights. Pryor came on and got the final 6 outs to preserve a very needed win 6-2. Pryor now has allowed only 2 hits in 46 official AB's since joining the Wings. Really haven't been paying much attention to him lately due to the constant failures of Tonkin, Thompson and Achter.
Wings attack tonite was once again led by Pinto and Hermann. Hermann was walked intentionally to load the bases to get to Pinto in the 7th with the score only 3-0. Pinto responded by slamming a 3-2 pitch into left for a game breaking 2 run single.
Pedro Florimon also had a good night with 2 hits, a RBI and 3 steals. Florimon has improved considerably after a very ragged start with the Wings.
A large Monday crowd of 8,800 looked on and finally had something to cheer about. Perhaps the one negative was the continuing struggles of Chris Colabello. Tonite, he did manage to bleed an RBI single thru the left side, but other than that he popped out, fanned and killed a rally with a 5-4-3 GIDP...his second in as many games.
Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding the team, tonite Pawtucket lost and Buffalo was idle, so the Wings are back into a tie with the Bisons who they play tomorrow night; and they move to within 2 games of the Pawsox for the WildCard. Keeping in mind our last 2 games are in Pawtucket....can't be more than 2 behind them when we play the final 2 of the season.
Newcomer Duffey pitches tomorrow in Buffalo. Bisons lead the season series 8-4.
With the large crowd the Wings average attendance finally passes 6,000 (6.035) with 5 home games left.
With the win Pino improves to 10-2 with a 2.47 ERA. He has been untouchable at Frontier Field. And he becomes the first Wings pitcher to win 10 this season.
tonite it was brought up whether the Wings will finish the season without anyone hitting 10 HR's. Tops on the team is Romero with 8 and he is stone cold. Colabello and Pinto have a shot...maybe even Ortiz.
