Red Wings finally showed some life this afternoon. After sleeping thru 7 innings and trailing Scranton 3-1 thanks the the RailRiders 3 run first inning, Rochester finally showed some spunk and went to work in the 8th inning. A leadoff single, followed by a groundout by (who else, the useless Aaron Hicks) ..was then followed by a bleeding bouncer up the middle by Farris, and somehow it got thru...scoring Colabello from 2nd to make it 3-2. Then a walk.
Brought Doug Bernier to the plate and he hammered one to deep left center scoring both runners and suddenly the Wings had the lead 4-3. They weren't done....thankfully. The other sparkplug infielder James Beresford then rocketed one to the fence in right scoring Bernier to give the Wings a 5-3 lead.
All that was left now was for Pryor to get thru the 9th. He got the first 2 quickly but then a solo HR cut the lead to 5-4...how big was that insurance run that Beresford drove in????
A pop out ended the game and the Wings had a huge win.
So, here is how it goes: Buffalo beat Pawtucket again meaning that both Buffalo and Pawtucket are now in a virtual tie for the wildcard....with Rochester 1 1/2 back of both. Keep in mind the Wings play Buffalo Fri and Sat and then Pawtucket Sun and Mon to end the season. Additionally, Buffalo will play one fewer games this year due to a cancelled rainout. So a half game is going to factor in the final outcome.
If Rochester can somehow find a way to win a game that Alex Meyer pitches tomorrow, they will gain one full game on either Buff or the Pawsox, since they are still playing each other. We could stay 1 1/2 behind one of them and move to 1/2 game of the other...with 6 games remaining.
Given how the schedule is working, a win tomorrow gives the Wings a decent shot. But win they must because if they lose they fall 2 1/2 behind the wildcard with 6 to play, making it almost impossible to catch up.
Its that simple.
Another sad game for Hicks...with runners at first and second and none out, and Wings trying to get back into the game, he couldn't get the bunt down and ended up striking out. Wings ended up not moving either runner that inning. That 8th inning rally came just in time.
Daniel Ortiz hit his 8th HR in the second inning for the Wings only run until the 4 run 8th.
