On a night when a huge win was theirs for the taking, the Wings just couldn't overcome their biggest weakness all season......WALKS. And some shoddy defense.
Wings scored 3 in the first inning and Kris Johnson was real sharp thru 6. But then disaster struck. Johnson couldn't find the strike zone in the 7th....and it awakened the sleeping juggernaut. He walked the first two batters, which destroyed an otherwise excellent performance. The usually reliable Lester Oliveros came on and on this night Leter just didn't have anything. Chiefs scored both of the walks on a Sac Fly and a seeing eye bouncer up the middle to make it 3-2.
Then in the 8th, the Chiefs just kept hitting the ball. They got 4 more hits off Oliveros and when the smoke cleared, Syracuse brought home the tying and winning runs. Just sad that all the good the Wings had built up went up in smoke as the playoffs get further from their reach.
Martine, with an ERA of 0.88 polished off the Wings easily in the 9th to complete the heartbreaking loss.
After the 1st inning, Wings managed only 2 hits.
Good teams find a way. Wings aren't quite good enough to overcome their season long nemesis,
Pawtucket lost so Wings stay 2 behind them, Buffalo split so they lost 1/2 to the Bisons...but its in the loss column.
A very very discouraging night.
I'm totally bummed out
