Joshua Dean, who was taken by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent on January 25, 2004, was named Twins' Minor League Player of the Week for the week ending August 19. The Australian-born first baseman batted .400 this past week, and hit safely in eight of his nine games. For Dean, he continues to get hot as the season comes to an end.

It has been a pretty good season for Dean, since making his Gulf Coast League debut on June 25. After batting only .111 in three June games, he went on a tear in July. The slugger batted .413 in 16 July games, and also hit his first professional home run.

Throughout the first 11 games of August, Dean is batting .333, and has walked nine times. Considering this is his first year of baseball away from his native Australia, Dean has made the transition seemingly easily.

He has appeared in 30 games for the GCL Twins this season, and is currently batting at a .352 clip. He has also shown the ability to bat from any place in the order, as he has hit in every slot except leadoff this season.

One look at Dean's split statistics and it is easy to see that he would rather be in the field. As a first baseman, the lefty swinger is batting .400, while as the designated hitter, he is only batting .258.

So far, the Twins are happy with what they are getting out of Dean. Howard Norsetter, the Twins international scout who signed Dean, had been watching his progress for three years before signing him. As of right now, the Twins may have found a gem down under.
