18-Year Old Kelly Promoted To Beloit

GCL Twins shortstop Paul Kelly was promoted to full-season Beloit on Monday, replacing the injured Angel Garcia. In 40 games with the GCL Twins, Kelly batted .277, and has hit over .300 in August. After struggling to start the season, Kelly has come on as of late, and the 18-year old will become the 25th player on the Beloit Snappers roster.

As the Gulf Coast League season has come to an end, 2005 second round draft choice Paul Kelly has been promoted to full-season Beloit. The move came as a replacement for pitcher Angel Garcia, who went on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.

The 54th overall pick in the draft, Kelly has played decently with the GCL Twins this season. In 40 games, the infielder batted .277, and drove in 20 runs. Kelly ended his GCL season with a five-game hitting streak.

Kelly played both third base and shortstop for the Twins, but his statistics show he is more comfortable playing shortstop. In 96 at-bats, Kelly batted .302, in contrast to his .171 average as a third baseman. As a shortstop in high school, Kelly can be more comfortable at the dish while playing a position he is familiar with.

A good sign for the Beloit Snappers is the fact that Kelly has come on as of late. He batted .338 in 19 August game, and hit both his home runs. He struggled to start his career, batting .214 in June, and .212 in July.

Only 18-years old, this is a huge promotion for a kid so young. He needs to show the ability to hit right-handers however, if he wants to keep earning the promotions. While crushing lefties to the tune of a .325 average, Kelly has batted .258 against lefties.

As a senior at Flower Mound High School in Texas, Kelly batted .439, with 12 home runs and 39 RBI. Also a pitcher in high school, Houston Astros Hall of Famer Roger Clemens is creditted with showing Kelly how to throw a slider while playing on the same team as Clemens' son.
