Daniel Matienzo has been on a tear for pretty much the whole season for the New Britain Rock Cats, and he has stayed hot as the season is coming to an end. He was recently named Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending August 28, after putting together some impressive numbers.

The slugging first baseman batted .483, while compiling a slugging percentage of .690. He led the Rock Cats to a 6-1 record, while stroking multiple hits in five of the seven games played.

In only his first year of Double-A ball, Matienzo is at the top of the league leaderboard in many statistical categories. He is currently second in hits with 146, second in doubles with 34, third in extra-base hits with 59, fourth in RBI with 87, and third in home runs with 23.

A 23rd round selection in the 2002 June Draft, Matienzo has been a pleasant surprise for the Twins, and is turning into their top first baseman prospect. A former Miami Hurricane, Matienzo is used to the spotlight, after playing in the College World Series.

Last year, with Fort Myers, he batted a very respectable .305, but hit only five home runs in 123 games. This season he has definitely put up the power numbers to go along with his ability to hit for average, and he has turned heads within the organization.
