Garza, Lis Honored By Leagues

This past week, Matt Garza and Erik Lis took home honors in their respective leagues. Garza, who was making his Double-A debut, was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. Lis, the slugging first baseman for the Beloit Snappers, was named Midwest League Batter of the Week.

Erik Lis was recently named Midwest League Player of the Week, after leading the Beloit Snappers in nearly every offensive category.  During the week, the Snappers finished with a 5-2 record, and Lis was in the middle of all the action.  The slugging first baseman hit safely in all seven games, had three three-hit games, and had multiple runs batted in four times.

It has been a great year so far for Lis, who was one of the key bats on the Elizabethton Twins last season.  For the year, Lis is batting .356, and is all over the Midwest League leader board.  If he continues to hit like this, the Twins may  think about moving him to the Florida State League, where the Fort Myers Miracle lineup is having problems putting the bat on the ball.

Over in the Eastern League, Matt Garza was named the Pitcher of the Week.  The right-hander, who was the Twins' first round draft pick in the 2005 draft, was making his Double-A debut this past week, and he showed exactly why he was promoted.

Garza had been tearing up the Florida State League at the time of his promotion, and had teamed with Kevin Slowey to form one of the best one-two punches in the league.  Now that he is with New Britain, he is showing why he was picked so high in last year's draft.  Some believe he could be ready for Triple-A already, but he should get some more Eastern League starts under his belt before any moves are made.
