Exclusive Interview On Joe Benson

In the second round of the 2006 draft, the Twins selected Joe Benson out of Joliet High School in Illinois. One of the best football players in the state of Illinois, Benson is also a terror on the diamond. On Wednesday, TwinCitiesDugout.com sat down with his High School Coach, Mr. Jared Ross, for a quick Q&A about Benson.

TwinCitiesDugout.com: Coach Voss, I know that Joe was a star in football at Joliet (IL) High School. Do you think baseball or football is his best sport?

Coach Voss: I believe that baseball is Joe's best sport. While he was a great football player, Joe's passion, according to him, has always been baseball.

TwinCitiesDugout.com:Were you surprised he went in the second round of the draft?

Coach Voss: I was not surprised that Joe went in the second round. It was his overall athleticism that was his selling point.

TwinCitiesDugout.com: What does a player like Joe Benson bring to a team?

Coach Voss: Joe is a true leader and has the respect of his teammates, coaches and the crowd. His "all day tough mentality" and ability to focus on the play sets the tone for the rest of the team. His winning attitude carries over to his teammates. He is an unselfish player promoting the team concept and success before his own.

TwinCitiesDugout.com: In your opinion, what do you feel is Joe's best attribute?

Coach Voss: Joe is a five-tool type of player. His speed, arm strength, ability to hit for average and power, and his defensive play make him a complete player.

TwinCitiesDugout.com: What is Joe like off of the playing field?

Coach Voss: Joe is a very social person, and has a likeable personality. He is respectful of others, and is a caring young man.

TwinCitiesDugout.com: In your eyes, who would you compare him to in the Major Leagues?

Coach Voss: The former player that I would compare him to is former Minnesota Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett. The guy who is playing right now that he most resembles, is Aaron Rowand of the Philadelphia Phillies.
