Live From Rochester: Wings Earn Series Split

In this edition of Live From Rochester, the Wings earn a much needed series split with the Louisville Bats. On deck for the Wings is Charlotte, who currently possess the best record in the International League. Matt Garza makes his third AAA start as the Wings open the series on Tuesday.

Considering how this series began, the Red Wings have to be very satisfied with a 2-2 split against the pesky Louisville Bats.

In a game that the Wings radio announcer made this comment to colorman Joe Altobelli: "I don't think they will be sending the tape of this game to the Hall of Fame", Boof Bonser pitched six strong innings to lead the Wings to a 7-3 victory. Bonser gave up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out eight to run his record to 5-4. Beau Kemp pitched the final three innings for his second save.

The Wings' bullpen is depleted with injuries to Matt Ford and Ricky Barrett, so they needed a strong start from Bonser. Things didn't start out that well, as Bonser fell behind 3-1, thanks in part to some shoddy defense by Andres Torres. Torres got a late jump on a sinking liner by Norris Hopper, which plated one run, and then Torres threw the ball a mile over third base and nearly into the stands as another run scored.

However, the Wings offense went to work, along with some equally shoddy defense by the Bats, and some wildness by their pitchers and scored six unanswered runs to win going away. Kevin West, who is finally heating up, led the Wings attack with three hits and three runs batted in. Shawn Wooten chipped in two RBI.

The victory was huge, because Scranton lost earlier in the day. The Wings lead is now two games as they prepare to take on the first place Charlotte Knights for the first time this season. The series will be highlighted with a start Friday night by hometown hero Tim Redding, who is trying to pitch his way back to the Majors with the White Sox. Redding went to manager Razor Shines (don't you just LOVE that name!!) and asked him to rearrange the rotation so he could pitch in his hometown for the first time.

Because Charlotte makes only one trip into Rochester, Shines graciously complied.

Matt Garza takes the mound tomorrow for his third AAA start. Quinton McCracken is expected to make his Red Wing debut.

The Wings next victory will be their 60th of the season.
