Live From Rochester: Wings Pick Up A Win

In this edition of Live From Rochester, Ted takes a look at the Red Wings' recent victory over Durham in their crucial eight-game road trip. He also gives his opinion on many topics, including whether or not Matt Garza will make his Major League debut this year.

It's not rocket science. In fact its quite elementary. The Wings must have a successful road trip to remain in playoff contention. Having fallen out of first place by a mere percentage point, after spending more than two full months atop the International League Northern Division, the Wings now are hearing other footsteps bearing down on them as they try to stop their nine year playoff drought.

With the red hot Scranton Red Barons shutting out the hot hitting Ottawa Lynx on Saturday, the Wings' 5-3 victory over the Durham Bulls was certainly good medicine. Never trailing in the game. Rochester took advantage of a very good outing by Boof Bonser, who went seven innings, allowing only four hits, two earned runs, only one walk and eight strikeouts.

Kevin Cameron pitched the final two innings to earn his seventh save and give Bonser his sixth win of the season against four losses. Boof's ERA is still a sparkling 2.84, as he continues to try and earn another promotion to the big club.

The Wings offense was sparked by Thomas Watkin's 3rd home run of the season. Additionally, Chris Heintz had two RBI from two productive outs, and Alexander Romero had two hits raising his average to a season high .242.

Both Erubiel Durazo and Quinton McCracken went hitless today.

Strictly Opinion:

  • The Wings might want to consider flip-flopping Cameron and Robert Korecky. Cameron has pitched 45 innings with seven saves and an ERA of 2.45. Korecky has gone 30 innings, given up 34 hits, with four saves and an ERA of 4.11. Seems to me that going down the stretch, Cameron would be the better closer and Korecky the set-up man. Bobby's two meltdowns on the just completed home stand would seem to indicate that he isn't quite up to the pressure of closing in important games.

  • The Wings are going to need good production from Kevin West, Glenn Williams and Garrett Jones in the final five weeks if they are to make the playoffs. All three have had sub-par seasons, despite the occasional flash of brilliance. Too occasionally for my liking.

  • I can see the Twins swapping Scott Baker for Matt Garza in the not too distant future.

  • I believe Jason Tyner will remain with the big club for the remainder of the season.

  • The Twins two losses to Detroit this weekend only serve to reinforce just how good the Tigers have become under manager Jim Leyland.
