Thomas Watkins, INF
My choice for hitter of the month is Tommy Watkins. He came out of nowhere, started playing regularly, and began to accumulate key hits for the Wings during a month when the team was in a total state of flux. The Wings were looking all month for some of the remaining vets to step up and it really didn't happen.
Honorable Mention: Kevin West, OF
West started to flash some power at long last. His batting average is only .223, but he was mostly terrible for the first three months so .223 relative to his previous stats was pretty good.
Most Improved: Alexander Romero, OF
Romero is hitting .235, but has started to make positive contributions both at bat and in the field.
Pitcher of the Month:
Mike Smith, SP
Smith has had quality starts every time out. He leads the team in wins with nine, and has a solid ERA of 3.52. He is a pitcher who will allow your bullpen to relax a bit every fifth day.
Honorable Mention: Matt Garza, SP and Kevin Cameron, RP
Garza made his first 4 starts in AAA and pitched very well. He has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.33 ERA. He has also put together a WHIP of .0.81. I still don't understand his unusually short outing on Sunday, where he only threw 69 pitches. Cameron has been a horse out of the overworked pen, and in my opinion is much better suited to be the closer than a very shaky Robert Korecky.
The Wings are now looking up at Scranton in the International League Northern Division standings. It will be very difficult for them to regain first place with the roster they currently have. Both Erubiel Durazo and Quinton McCracken will have to contribute a whole lot more, and Garrett Jones needs to step up as well.
