Perkins Promoted To Rochester

With the promotions of Scott Baker and Chris Heintz to Minnesota, the Red Wings needed to bolster their roster. Glen Perkins and Jose Morales will be added to the Red Wings roster, as the Wings try to make a serious run to the International League playoffs.

With the promotions of Scott Baker and Chris Heintz to the Minnesota Twins, the Rochester Red Wings have added Glen Perkins and Jose Morales to their roster, as they try to make an impact in the International League playoff race. Some believed that Perkins was ready for the International League at the beginning of the season, but it has been an up-and-down year for the left-handed starting pitcher. Morales has struggled with the stick this season, but he has been hitting the ball better lately.

Last fall, Perkins had a great Arizona Fall League season, and it was most likely that he would begin the season in Rochester. When he started off the season in New Britain, it seemed like only a matter of time before he was in a Red Wings jersey. However, after posting plus 4.00 earned run averages in May, June, and July, it did not seem like Perkins was ready to make the jump.

Recently, Perkins has been doing a lot better, and he was almost unhittable during his last two starts. In 12 combined innings, Perkins has picked up wins in both starts, and he has allowed only one earned run. He has also struck out 16 batters, giving him 131 strikeouts in 117 innings of work this season.

Morales has been the Rock Cats' starting catcher this season, and he is finally batting above the Mendoza Line. Though he is batting only .196 in August, Morales did bat .333 in eight games in July after hitting .281 in June. He 23-year old backstop could prove to be a good addition to the Red Wings, especially considering he poses a matchup problem being a switch-hitter.
