Twins Shuffle Minor League Pitchers

The Twins shuffled their minor league pitching staffs on Wednesday, as top prospect Kyle Waldrop was promoted to New Britain from High-A Fort Myers. Frank Mata was also promoted to New Britain, as the Rock Cats sent Nick Blackburn and Jonathan Martinez to Triple-A Rochester. Rochester reliever Julio DePaula was promoted to Minnesota earlier in the week.

The Minnesota Twins made multiple roster moves within their organization on Wednesday, as they shuffled some pitchers around the system. Involved in the transactions were top prospect Kyle Waldrop, reliever Frank Mata, starter Nick Blackburn, and reliever Jonathan Martinez. All are expected to suit up for their new teams on Thursday.

Waldrop was promoted from Fort Myers to New Britain, as the young right-hander was dominating in the Florida State League. Waldrop put on some extra weight in the off-season, and it definitely has paid off, as he was stellar in his eight FSL starts. Waldrop was 4-2 for the Miracle, posting a 2.86 earned run average.

Joining Waldrop in the move to New Britain was Frank Mata, who was one of the more dominant relievers on the Miracle this season. Mata made 13 appearances for the Miracle, picking up two wins and a save. Mata also had a stellar 1.33 earned run average.

Making the jump to AAA ball are Blackburn and Martinez, both of whom have been a huge part of the Rock Cats pitching staff this season. Blackburn has been the most dominant right-handed starter on the Cats this season, posting a 3.08 earned run average in eight appearances. Blackburn appeared in games for the Red Wings in 2006, and will be counted on to join the Wings rotation.

Martinez has been great from the pen since joining the Twins organization, and this season was no different. He made 11 appearances for New Britain, posting an earned run average under 2.00. He also had a save.

The moves were made necessary based not only on the pitchers performances, but also the recent promotion of Julio DePaula to the Minnesota Twins. DePaula got the call when Twins reliever Jesse Crain was placed on the Disabled List.
