TCD Player of the Week: Kevin Slowey

After a brilliant start to the season in the Rochester starting rotation, Kevin Slowey appeared destined to begin a wonderful career with the Twins. However, Slowey is back with the Rochester Red Wings, and appears ready for another shot at The Show.

After several starts with the Twins that ranged from solid to disappointing, Slowey was sent back to Rochester to work on placement of his off speed pitches and speed differential between his various pitches.

Kevin's first start back in Rochester was good, pitching 6 innings with 8 hits, 3 runs, 5 strikeouts and no walks. This week he was back in form as he led the Wings to a 1-0 win on Tuesday, pitching a 9 inning complete game shutout. Kevin gave up only 3 hits while striking out 8 with 1 walk.

For the season at Rochester, Kevin has made 11 starts, pitching 79.1 innings with 58 hits, 15 runs (14 earned), 70 strikeouts and only 6 walks. He has a 1.59 ERA which is not only tops amongst all pitchers in the International League, it is over a run and a half better than Charlotte's Gavin Floyd who is second with a 3.12 ERA. Kevin's 0.81 WHIP also leads the league with Norfolk's Garrett Olson second with a 1.06 WHIP. Having given up only 3 home runs ties him with several pitchers for a league best for all pitchers with at least 0.8 innings pitched per game, while his 6 walks are 8 and 11 walks less than pitchers with the second and third fewest walks in the league.

Kevin is a very sharp young man who will work hard to fine tune his game so that when he returns later this season, he will likely take a spot in the Twins rotation for many years.
