TCD Top Stories: Delaney Breaks Save Record

One of the top stories of the 2007 season in the Twins Minor League season was Robert Delaney setting the single-season save record for the Beloit Snappers. Delaney set the record in a little over a half a season, and then went on to dominate in the Florida State League.

The 2007 season was one to remember for Robert Delaney, who went from non-drafted free agent, to possibly a top-20 prospect in the Twins organization. A product of Saint John's University, Delaney was one of the better relief pitchers in all of the minor leagues in 2007, and is slated to be with New Britain in 2008. If he has a year like he did this past season, then he could be in Minnesota very soon.

Not only did he have a great season, but Delaney put himself in the record books in 2007, and that is what makes him one of our top stories of 2007. In a little over a half a season with the Beloit Snappers, Delaney set the Beloit single-season save record, after notching 28 saves in 29 save opportunities.

A Midwest League mid-season All-Star, Delaney was dominant from the outset of the season, and rode that into a promotion to High-A Fort Myers. In total, Delaney appeared in 36 games for the Snappers, posting an incredible 0.77 earned run average. He also struck out 56 batters in 46.2 innings of work, while holding the opposition to a .152 batting average.

Amazingly, Delaney only gave up four earned run all season long when he was in the Midwest League, and allowed only one home run.

Once promoted to Fort Myers, Delaney continued to succeed out of the bullpen. In 17 games, Delaney nailed down seven of seven save opportunities, and had a 1.54 earned run average. He did not look overmatched at all, and appears ready to take the next step in his career. In total, he struck out 27 batters in 23.1 innings of work.

Before joining the Twins organization, Delaney was actually a starter for Saint John's in college. He made 15 starts in his last season with the Red Storm, and struck out better than a batter per inning.

All told, Delaney saved 35 games in 2007.
