Rochester Red Wings Season Preview

Here is a season preview of the Rochester Red Wings. Inside, we take a look at the 2008 roster, as well as give some insight as to who should emerge as team leaders this season. Take a look at who is on the cusp of making the Major Leagues.

The 2008 Rochester Red Wings will have a familiar look to it's roster, as some of the bigger named prospects from the 2007 version are returning to the team for another go around, and take aim at the International League Championship. With a good mix of arms and bats, the Red Wings do not have the kind of firepower they had in 2007, but should put a good team on the field everyday.

With big name pitchers like Matt Garza and Kevin Slowey gone, the Red Wings will need to rely on some pretty solid starters in 2008. The starting rotation should read as follows: Phillip Humber, Brian Duensing, Zach Day, Glen Perkins, and Kevin Mulvey. Humber and Mulvey will be making their debuts in the Twins organization, after coming over to the Twins in the Johan Santana trade. Perkins and Duensing have both had success at the Triple-A level, and Day has pitched at the Major League level.

With a good mix of right-handers and left-handers, the starting five should be able to keep the Red Wings in a lot of ballgames.

The relief corps should also be solid, as closer Bobby Korecky returns after setting the franchise record for saves in 2007. Setting up the right-hander will be guys like Carmen Cali, Ricky Barrett, Julio DePaula, and Mariano Gomez. Former Major League Danny Graves also dots the Rochester roster, and could get a couple of save opportunities in 2008.

The Red Wings list of position players are a group of guys who could reach the Major League level at any time in 2008. Four big names that return to Rochester in 2008 are CF Denard Span, 3B Brian Buscher, 1B/OF Garrett Jones, and 2B/SS Alexi Casilla. All four are expected to be catalysts for the team this season. Casilla and Span give the team good speed at the top of the lineup, and Jones and Buscher will be counted on to drive in runs.

The team also looks to get production from OF Jason Pridie, C Jose Morales, and INF Matt Macri, all of whom should see significant time. Accompanying them will be guys like Douglas Deeds, Ryan Jorgensen, Alejandro Machado, Randy Ruiz, and Tommy Watkins, all very good minor league players.
